Giveaway: Big Book & Le Creuset Essentials Giveaway!

Posted by on Friday May 27th, 2011 | Print

[GIVEAWAY CLOSED: 6/8/11]

We’re so excited to finally have the book out in the world. And it’s high time we thanked you for all your support over the years-support that propelled BGSK in the blogosphere and onto the shelf.

To show our gratitude, we’re giving away our all-time favorite kitchen item: a 5.5 Quart Le Creuset Dutch Oven. In the beginning of the book, we talk about our must-have small kitchen equipment, and this bad boy is at the top of our list.

Le Creuset pots are pricy, but they are a worthy investment, as you may otherwise find yourself buying a handful of other dinky pots and pans to compensate for the oven’s many functions—they can double as a pasta pot, can be used in the oven in place of a baking dish, and have sufficient surface area for simmering a sauce or sautéing veggies. Phoebe’s medium-sized Le Creuset (in flame), which you might have seen pop up in pictures on the blog, was a gift from her grandmother to her mother in 1979, when she moved into her first twenty-something apartment. At forty years and counting, it will likely outlive her.

The lucky winner of this small kitchen essential will also receive a signed copy of our book!

To enter the BGSK Book & Le Creuset Essentials Giveaway, you must:

  • Leave a comment below and tell us your favorite BGSK recipe (from blog or book!)

We’ll announce the randomly selected winner next week on the blog. Good luck!

From our kitchen, albeit small, to yours,

Cara & Phoebe, THE QUARTER-LIFE COOKS

So generous! I have been eyeing a LeCreuset for a long time now, waiting until I can splurge on it. As far as recipes go, I love how you organize them into menus for specific occasions, ie date night, BFF night, spring break. So I think my favorite menu so far is the spring break buffet with fish tacos, mango salad, black bean dip, etc. I also think the aphrodisiac party menu was hilarious and delicious-looking, I want to try the brownie petit-fours!

We currently live in converted hotel, so our kitchen in tiny. To conserve space we’ve tried to find items we can use for multiple applications. We’ve been wanting a dutch oven for a while, but being newly weds and in grad school we don’t have the resources. I am, however, currently saving up for the book, I am hoping to learn more about how to (creatively) cook in our tiny kitchen with my husband beside me :)

Love the Cavatelli with Radish Leaf Almond Pesto - always looking for ways to use the whole vegetable and with my radishes coming in soon, this will be tried and tried again! AND, Boeuf Bourguignon, which I will be able to make to perfection if I win this - one of my dream kitchen necessities - been dying for a Le Creuset!

  • Dianademos

ONE of my favs is the Springy Frittata with Asparagus, Scallion, and Fontina because I love to get more protein in my diet…and always have eggs I must use before they hard boil on their own…

I also have a pet peeve that so many recipes don’t look anything like the picture BUT on this site, i’ve probably done 35 and they have all been exceptional and then used again. I would never indulge in this expensive pot…but it would be a real dream to have. Thanks for the opportunity! diana

My favorite recipe from the blog (my pre-ordered book is on the way!) is definitely the lamb bolognese. I was definitely intrigued by a recipe that called for so much tomato paste, but it made an amazingly rich, delicious sauce that is now stocking my freezer for an awesome future dinner or two. I’m excited to try the other sauces from that post as well.

A THREE-QUARTER-COOK checking in! Still cooking and loving it, always seeking new ideas, recipes, things to keep this 70-year-old-cook and her food fresh! I’m thrilled to see THE QUARTER-LIFE COOKS being so in the forefront of cuisine — it encourages me that the art — and pleasure — of cooking will not be lost! I’ve been watching this blog for awhile, and have just subscribed. I somehow got here through my favorite container gardening blog, Life on the Balcony, and on though SBCanning (making strawberry-rhubarb jam this week) to BGSK. My favorite recipe is for your Dark Chocolate Cookies with Milk Chocolate Chips. Good luck with your book sales! I’m an avid Amazon fan, and will undoubtedly purchase the book, though I have NO plans to read it the Kindle — that seems pretty silly. I want the full text, full sized, and in full color!

I use your basic basil pesto recipe all the time - pasta, chicken, sandwiches. So. Good. Also, seeing as I’m about to be a big girl and move to a small kitchen of my own, this pot would be a fantastic way to start off cooking at my first place on my own!

Despite being the most basic, I think having a “recipe” for grilled cheese is what makes you guys so great! It’s all about starting with basics and grilled cheese is a tasty basic.

My favorite BGSK recipe experience was with the Fish Tacos & Cilantro Lime Crema. I made this for a birthday party and they were a huge hit. I’d never deep fried anything before and so we made it into a funny group effort. They came out so well and I kept overhearing my friends saying “This. Is. SO. Good.” while choking on them because they were so hot. The sauce was perfect and they were so light and simple. Thank you!

I just made your classic chocolate chip cookie recipe this morning. I had a slight panic when I realized that I read the recipe wrong and used 2 1/2 cups of flour instead of 2 1/4 cups. I used 1 tsp. of milk and 1/2 tsp. of vanilla to loosen the batter and they turned out fabulous! My cookies were just set after about 9-10 minutes ( I have an older oven) and I put a few sprinkles of sea salt on the top of the warm cookies. My sister often stops by my apartment on her lunch break and she tested them and said, “Oh my god, these are the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever had.” Can’t wait to try more recipes! I think the Sexy Ugly Onion Tart is next on the list! :)

I LOVE almost all your recipes…Hard to pick just one, so, here’s my favorite day of your favorite
    recipes:
Breakfast: oatmeal and Phoebe’s classic chocolate chip cookies,
Lunch: butternut squash mac and cheese and classic chocolate chip cookies,
Dinner: Heirloom tomato bruschetta (and I’m growing my own heirloom tomatoes in my container garden) and Rosemary and garlic grilled lamb chops which are divine (and SO different from anything my mother—who really hated to cook—would have made for dinner when I was a kid) and classic chocolate chip cookies.
Delicious! a perfect day of perfect foods!
Thank you both for all your inspiration and encouragement to cook.
    LOVE all your recipes.

I have only just found your website - such bad luck! Because I have a tiny South London flat with an even tinier kitchen, and my weekly grocery budget has to stretch pretty far, so I love the option to choose recipes based on space and funds! My favourite recipe after a quick perusal is the Dark Black Beans with Yellow Rice, Avocado and Sweet Potatoes. I have all of those ingredients at any one time, and I am currently obsessed with black beans!!
I had to leave my Le Creuset fry pan and griddle pan in my home country when I moved to London, so I would love to win a Le Creuset dutch oven - I know how amazing their products are!!! Have subscribed to your newsletter and on FB :-)

Your sweet potato black bean burger recipe is absolutely to die for! I haven’t had the foresight to plan ahead and make many of your recipes, but they’re so consistently good that I’ve been getting my rear in gear and making them.

  • Sarah

My favorite recipe is the Jambalaya. Just the right amount of spice, great flavor and loveee that it is all cooked in one pot! I’ve got to remember to half the recipe though, I’ve been eating leftovers for every meal.

  • Laura

I used the Chana Bateta for a “easy” (read, cheap) way to feed 30 people for $50 for my Dale Carnegie class - having to work around two vegetarians and someone who was extremely lactose intolerant made any meal decisions REALLY hard, and adding to the challenge was a class that only donated about $45-55 per meal (this was a weekly thing for me). This got rave reviews, has stayed in my handwritten cookbook
