It’s Slow Cooker Week here on Small Kitchen College!
All week long, we’re teaming up with Kelsey Banfield, aka The Naptime Chef, and of course Big Girls, Small Kitchen to bring you the first ever Slow Cooker Challenge. You might ask: what do college cooks and moms like Kelsey have in common? Answer: they’re BUSY.
We here at SKC and BGSK are big believers in the power of the slow cooker. Whether you’re making a comforting stew on Monday to last the whole week, or creating a flavorful base for a creative cocktail, the slow cooker lets you cook while you attend class, attend to your children, and deal with life outside the kitchen (even if that kitchen is actually a dorm room).
We’ll be partnering with Big Kitchen and offering up two great slow cookers, one on each of our sites! See below for how to take home this awesome Delonghi model, and make sure to visit The Naptime Chef for another chance to win a stylish Breville slow cooker.
More importantly, we’ll be joined by an all-star list of bloggers and food sites who will be sharing in the slow cookin’ fun and posting recipes, tips, and tricks throughout the week. To get in on the action, simply post about the challenge and feature a slow cooker recipe on your own site and shoot us the link. We’ll add you to the growing list below! Also, make sure to check out our Slow Cooker Pinterest board and Kelsey’s where we’ll be pinning all the great recipes!
Don’t own a slow cooker? Not to worry! This week is really about celebrating one-pot, hands-off recipes, whether they’re safely cooking in your Crock Pot, or slowly braising in the oven.
On Wednesday, January 18th from 12pm - 1pm, we’ll be hosting a live twitter chat along with Food52, The Daily Meal, Punchfork, Fine Cooking, Foodily, Gojee, OXO Good Grips and more. We’ll be using hash tag #slowcooker. Tune in to talk all things slow cookin’! During the Twitter event and throughout the day we’ll be offering a bonus giveaway of amazing OXO Good Grip tools that are essential for slow-cooking valued at over $150!
On Thursday, January 19th we’ll be slow-cookin’ all day on Facebook you can enter to win a second prize-pack of OXO Good Grips kitchen tools by uploading photographs of your slow-cooked meals to The Naptime Chef or Small Kitchen College fanpage.
To enter the SKC Slow Cooker Challenge Giveaway, you must:
**If you don’t have facebook, notify us in the comments section and that requirement will be waved.
The contest runs from Monday January 16th at 7:00am through Saturday January 21st at 7:00pm. Winner will be announced Sunday January 22nd at 7:00am ET.
Disclosure: This gift was generously donated by the kind people at BigKitchen.com.

My favorite slowcooker recipe is corned beef and cabbage. I make it with tons of garlic, uuummmmm great winter meal. I’ve been using the same crockpot since 1975, so this would be a welcome addition to my kitchen.
I’m a huge fan, like you both on FB and get the newsletters.

Love my mom’s “recipe” for post roast- big hunk of beef, onions, cream of mushroom, and beef broth. Reminds of me growing up and her “making dinner” at 7am before school! I recently taught her how to roast garlic, and she repaid me by giving me her old crockpot- cracked lid and all. I would love a new one, especially since this one is too small for all the recipes I have been trying this winter!!

I think soup is may favorite thing to make in a slow cooker. I’d kind of like to branch out, though. Jam would be intriguing to me, since theoretically you wouldn’t have to stir it as much as you do on the stovetop. (Thanks for allowing non-facebook entries… I don’t use that site.)

Slow cooker! Yes, I cook dried beans in the crock pot, add some herbs, broth, maybe a crispy slice of bacon. Then they do their thing and it’s so much more economical than canned beans, and healthy too!

I’ve been looking up recipes to cook in my slow cooker in my dorm. So far, the best thing I’ve done is a purple hull pea soup with sausage. It involves a bag of frozen purple hull peas, frozen onions, sliced up and grilled sausage, and chicken stock. It tastes great after cooking on low for over 8 hours and tastes even better after it’s been in the fridge overnight.
I can’t get on Facebook right now (it is blocked on the network i’m using at school…!) to like the Big Kitchen, but I do like BGSK.
