College Town Tours: The Best of Syracuse, NY

DSC_0098

Chances are you probably only know two things about Syracuse: 1. we have a pretty good basketball team and 2. it’s freaking cold. As a high school student, I was one of the many who knew next to nothing about this Central New York town. It really was a stroke of fate that landed me here, as no one in my home state of Michigan even realizes that New York state extends beyond the Big Apple, but I’m certainly glad that this is where I ended up.

Welcome to Syracuse. A nearly-annual winner of the Golden Snowball Award due to …

College Town Tours: The Best of Lancaster, PA

IMG_3908

When people hear the words “Lancaster, Pennsylvania,” they usually think of a few choice things: quilts, cows, barnstorming, and the Amish. It is my mission to break this stereotype because it’s only going to a college out of state that has made me realize just how fantastic my hometown can be. It’s busting with international culture, lively entertainment, great people, and a lot of booze and baked goods.

College Town Tours: The Best of Williamsburg, NY

_MG_3183

So, Williamsburg is not exactly your typical college town. It’s full of NYU students too broke to afford rent in Manhattan, 20-somethings who are also short on cash, young families, Hasidic Jews, and a variety of immigrants. It doesn’t have the sights of Manhattan, but it is refreshingly free of tourists and has a distinct culture. Perhaps the best example of this is the burgeoning food scene, which emphasizes local food and a DIY attitude. If you’re picturing artisanal eggplant pickles, impressive latte art, and bean-to-bar chocolate, and you’re on the right track.

College Town Tours: The Best of Paris, France

The charming Ile St. Louis in the center of Paris.

For the French in particular, food represents a mentality. As one saying goes, “in the US one eats to live; in France, one lives to eat.” Taste, to the French, is a key part of the good life. The French are obsessed with food, and rightly so: it’s not only a biological need, but an art of living. Paris isn’t like other cities. Sure, as the capital, she is conceived of as a symbol of France and her people. But the beauty of Paris lies in the mix of tradition with trend.

Of course you will find, and enjoy, classic …

College Town Tours: The Best of Baltimore, MD

SONY DSC

Johns Hopkins is located in the northern part of Baltimore in Charles Village. It’s a green campus, set off in its own little neighborhood and really combines the best of two worlds - it’s a self-contained campus just minutes from some of Baltimore’s coolest, most exciting neighborhoods.

When I told people I was going to Hopkins, people loved to talk about how I was going to be “living in The Wire.” But I was pleasantly surprised to find that my first impressions of Baltimore were closer to the truth: it is a fabulous city with lots of charm. There are …

College Town Tours: The Best of Orange County, CA

University of California, Irvine

Irvine is not your typical college town. In fact, it’s not really a college town at all. Well aware of this fact as an entering freshman at UC Irvine, I decided to take on the challenge of searching for the best of the best (food included) in Irvine by the time I graduate. One would think this would be an easy task for a college with an Eater (short for anteater) as the mascot. Let me tell you, it’s not. The first thing every Eater learns is that you must escape the Irvine bubble and venture into the …

College Town Tour: A Vegetarian’s Guide to D.C.

IMG_8225

You’ve stalked the menu in advance like it’s a treasure map. You’ve consulted with the wait staff and danced a verbal tango with the chef. You’ve cringed upon being served a gourmet plate of…iceberg lettuce and ranch dressing. And then, you’ve sighed as your date runs for the hills. You have #vegetarianproblems. Or maybe you don’t. Maybe you’re feeling a little blah about pumpkin pie being the only “vegetable” in your diet for the past few months. Maybe you’re a giving Meatless Mondays a go just for a change of pace. Maybe you’re trying to eat a little bit “greener” …

College Town Tours: The Best of Evanston, IL

downtown-chicago-hotel-exterior

As a Northwestern tour guide, I always say that we have the best of both worlds: the big city of Chicago just minutes away, and the awesome college town that is Evanston flanking campus on three sides (the fourth being Lake Michigan). It may be a cheesy thing to say to wide-eyed high school juniors, but it’s also totally true. Having Chicago so close means that we have access to a myriad of things to do, places to eat and sights to see, but Evanston itself is almost a bigger selling point. An awesome and active downtown is punctuated with …

College Town Tours: The Best of Villanova, PA

VLUU L210 / Samsung L210

Once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker. How could anything compete with the biggest of apples, the city that’s famous for its insomnia? At least, that’s what I thought before I moved to Villanova, Pennsylvania, a small suburb of Philadelphia, to start my undergrad years.

Once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker? Famous last words.

Just a stone’s throw from the City of Brotherly Love, on what Delaware Valley natives affectionately know as the “Main Line,” Villanova looks like any other Northeastern suburb chock full of yellow school buses and Ugg boot owners. And while it may be …
