A Grill-Free Memorial Day Picnic

If you moved into your apartment in the fall, you may have forgotten all about the importance of outdoor space. All winter, you were holed up in your cozy little crib. And then Memorial Day hits, and you realize you are one of those sorry Americans without a deck, roof, or terrace and, more importantly, without a grill. But don’t despair: there are many fun ways to celebrate the beginning of summer without putting a nice brown crosshatch on your steaks. If you don’t have private outdoor space, there are plenty of public alternatives to track down. We’ve put together a great Memorial Day picnic menu where all you need is a patch of green, a corkscrew, and a blanket covered in friends.

Crunchy Chicken Salad Sandwiches with Bacon

The Simplest Pasta Salad: Fusilli with Pomodoro Fresco
(recipe featured in In The Small Kitchen)

Fennel-Cabbage Slaw

In the winter, I love our little 3rd floor apartment because it’s so cozy and it feels great to be up and away from the blustery weather. And then summer comes and I feel trapped and claustrophobic without a porch, deck, balcony or yard! Thanks for the menu :) I’m glad I’m not the only one who still feels compelled to plan a picnic without any of those things or a grill!
